ABOUT... Sheet Cakes:
Sheet cakes are typically sized at a quarter sheet (30 servings), a half
sheet (60 servings), and a full sheet (120 servings). We have many
clients who try to order a half sheet, as it is a term they have heard,
and then are surprised to hear it serves 60. The quarter sheet is
the most common size, as it happily fits the needs of most special
occasion parties.
ABOUT... Cake Shapes:
Love
At First Bite Cakery cakes can be baked in a variety of shapes--such as round, heart,
oval, square, hexagon, and flower petal--with our custom pans. To
get a 3-D or special-shaped cake, our cake designer is very skilled at
hand carving large blocks of cake into sculpted shapes to fit your
design needs.
ABOUT... Tiered Cakes:
Though commonly seen at
weddings, the tiered cake is becoming popular for birthday and graduation
events, too. This design allows for a stacking of one shape or
different shapes of cakes. The cakes can be stacked upon each other
or separated by specialized cake equipment such as pillars, globes, bowls,
columns, cake stands, etc. Tiered cakes also require special internal
equipment such as dowels, boards, and plates to help the cake withstand
the weight of the tiers stacked upon it. Finally, tiered cakes must be a
slightly firmer cake texture than a sheet cake to also aid in
maintaining its structure.
ABOUT... Cupcakes:
Cupcakes
can range in a variety of sizes (mini, standard, king-size, jumbo,
etc.), though nearly all our orders are for the traditional standard
size, which serves one person. Unlike an overall design on a
regular cake, cupcakes each have to be hand-decorated with one or
sometimes various designs. Due to the extra time to hand-decorate
each individual cupcake, the labor is often greater to produce custom
cupcakes.
ABOUT... Cake Fillings:
Cake
fillings can be a lovely way to incorporate additional flavors to a
custom cake; however, certain cakes should not have custard or mousse
fillings. If you are thinking of ordering a hand-carved 3-D cake,
soft fillings can spell disaster. The cake provides the much
needed structure for carved cakes, so, if filled, should contain a
sticky filling like buttercream, in order to hold the layers firmly
together. Otherwise, you 3-D shape may slip and slide apart under
its own weight.
ABOUT... Transporting
Cakes:
Cakes
are very temperamental--after all, they are made out of just soft cake
and not ceramic or concrete--and must be transported carefully.
Therefore, this can be the most stressful part of the cake
process. We delivery any cake for a delivery charge, and this is
the best way to guarantee safe delivery of your cake to the table at
your event. However, we certainly allow a customer to pickup their
cake, if they wish, but we often note the following important aspects in
transporting your cake yourself. First, make sure you have a
vehicle that will accommodate the size of the cake--you must have a
flat, level surface that will easily fit the cake board or box.
Second, make sure that space is clean, as you do not want dirt, hair, or
trash getting in the box or attaching itself to your cake. Third,
slow and gentle driving--no potholes, speed bumps, or quick
stops/starts/turns--or your cake will be a tossed-about mess once you
arrive. And finally, cool, Cool, COOL! You MUST have a VERY
air-conditioned ride for your cake, as warm temperatures will make your
buttercream melt and your cake slide apart with every bump and turn.
